When it comes to home improvement projects, there are so many out there that you might not even know where to start. Luckily for you, one of the simplest and most straightforward projects you can do, by yourself, is to convert a light switch into an outlet. By combining the right tools, materials and some basic knowledge that you’ll learn from this guide, you can turn a basic light switch into a functional and aesthetic power source.
What Will I Need?
Here are all the tools and materials you’ll need to successfully convert a light switch into an outlet:
- Screwdrivers (Both a Phillips and a flathead)
- Wire Cutters or Wire Strippers
- Voltage Tester
- Electrical Tape
- New Electrical Outlet
- Wire Connectors
- Electrical Box Extension (if necessary)
- Safety Gear including goggles and gloves.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1. Cut the Power
When completing home projects, it’s important to remember that safety is the number one priority. To start, locate your home’s electrical panel and turn off the circuit breaker that controls the light switch you’re replacing. After that, use a voltage tester to confirm the power is completely off before moving on.
Step 2. Remove the Light Switch Cover
Now that the power is off, it’s time to remove the light switch. Using a screwdriver, carefully unscrew the screws that are securing the cover plate in place. Once the screws are out, remove the cover and place it to the side.
Step 3. Remove the Light Switch
Next, you’ll remove the light switch itself. Continue with the screwdriver to unscrew it from the electrical box. Gently pull the switch forward to expose the connected wires.
Step 4. Disconnect Wires
Once the wires are exposed, take note of how they are connected to the light switch. Typically, you’ll see one or two black (hot) wires, a white (neutral) wire, and a green or bare copper (ground) wire. Label these wires to ensure easy reinstallation, then carefully disconnect them from the switch.
Step 5. Prepare the Wires for the New Outlet
Before installing the new outlet, straighten the wire ends using wire cutters or strippers, ensuring they’re clean and damage-free. If necessary, trim any damaged sections and then strip about ½ inch of insulation from the ends.
Step 6. Install New Outlet
You’re halfway done! Place the new electrical outlet into the electrical box, making sure the wires align with the correct terminal screws:
- Black (hot) wires go to the brass terminals.
- White (neutral) wire goes to the silver terminal.
- Green or bare copper (ground) wire goes to the green terminal.
Step 7. Secure the Outlet and Cover Plate
Carefully tuck the wires into the electrical box, making sure to avoid any sharp bends or twists. This is important because bent or twisted wires can create unnecessary stress on the connections, leading to loose contacts, which could cause electrical issues or even a potential fire hazard. Once the wires are neatly tucked, secure the outlet to the box, then reattach the cover plate to complete the installation.
Step 8. Turn on the Power and Test
It’s time to turn the circuit breaker back on to restore power to your brand new outlet. Use your voltage tester to verify the outlet has power, and plug in a small appliance to ensure everything is functioning properly.
Voila! In just eight simple steps, you’ve successfully converted a lightswitch to an outlet.
