  • Install detectors within 3 feet of the peak for rooms with pitched ceilings but no closer than 4 inches from the highest point.
  • Avoid placing detectors near windows, doors, vents, or ceiling fans, as these areas can interfere with their proper function.
  • Whenever possible, interconnect smoke detectors so that when one detects smoke, all alarms sound. This ensures that everyone in your home is alerted regardless of their location.


Determining the number of smoke detectors your home needs is based on a few factors, like the size of your living space, the number of floors, and potential fire hazards. We recommend placing a smoke detector in key areas like the kitchen, hallway and bedrooms for single-floor homes. For multi-floor homes, a detector should be on each level, including the basement and attic, and a detector in each bedroom and common area. 


Battery-operated smoke detectors are easy to install and can be placed anywhere. If hardwired detectors are used, it’s best to contact a licensed electrician for help with installation.
