Whatever your local requirements happen to be, for safety’s sake, remember the old saying; water and electricity don’t mix. It’s vital to have a qualified electrician take care of your pool and hot tub wiring. Not only for hot tub electrical installation but also for inspection and repair.
The Canadian Electrical Code is regularly upgraded for everyone’s protection. AJ’s Electricians will ensure your pool and hot tub electrical installation is safe and compliant with the Canadian Electrical Code.
Requirements for Hot Tub Wiring
In ground pools require bonding all the way around the pool and equipment, ladders, diving boards, etc. must be bonded. As well to meet Code requirements, spas , hot tubs and pools are required to have a disconnect switch. This allows the user to turn the power on or off to the spa, hot tub, or pool. The disconnect must be safely out of range from the water’s edge. This ensures that a person can’t have their foot in the water while touching the switch, resulting in electrocution.
Electricity and water concerns also include:
- the proximity of power and telecommunication lines
- proximity to underground wiring
- proper grounding of nearby outlets
- Hot tubs need to be on a GFCI breaker: either 40A, 50A, or 60A
- All plugs and lights close to a pool need to be GFCI protectors
- All metal (ie: fencing) around a pool needs to be bonded
- Hot tubs need to wired in nothing lower than #6 copper wire
