EV Charging Station & Installations in Vancouver

Across the country, Canadians are “going green” by choosing electric vehicles. In fact, electrical vehicle sales in Canada reached an all-time high in 2017, with record sales reported. Today, there are more than 47,000 electric vehicles on Canadian roads.

All-electric vehicles don’t have a gas tank; instead, they must be plugged into a charging station to fuel up. Most of your EV’s charging will be done at home, making it necessary to contact a licensed electrician for an EV charging station installation whether you live in Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Surrey, Delta, Langley or Burnaby. Here are some things to consider when installing an EV charging station at your home.

Types of Electrical Charging Stations

Charging your electric car is a simple process: you simply plug the car into a charger that’s connected to the grid by an experienced electrical contractor. These chargers typically are available in three of the following categories: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 1 chargers do not require any additional equipment – you simply plug the car into a nearby outlet. However, you may need to contact an electrician in or around Vancouver if no outlet is available in the desired area.

Your electrician may recommend a Level 2 charger if you have solar panels on your home or operate a small business. Level 2 stations provide faster charging than Level 1s, and often are provided by car manufacturers.

Level 3 charging stations offer speedy charging: here, a car generally reaches full charge in just 20 minutes. However, our electrical contractors in Vancouver recommend these stations for commercial use and typically would not install them in a residence.

Cost of Electrical Charging Stations

The type of EV station you choose will determine the total cost. Level 1 stations tend to be less costly than Level 2 and 3 stations. During your consultation, our electrician will provide an estimate of the total expense.

Requirements for an Electrical Charging Station

Before purchasing an EV charging station it’s important to know exactly where the car will be parked. Then, consider the space – measure the distance between the charging station and the port on your car. Will your cord reach the port easily? If your electrician requires extensive wiring to make a connection, the installation is likely to be more complicated.

In addition to finding a convenient area for the station, you must ensure that the device is compliant with local energy ordinances. Contact your utilities provider to see what options are available.
